In Arc Raiders, a weapon's performance and role often determine a player's tactical choices when facing different enemies.
For players familiar with Arc Raiders ecosystem, a weapon's value lies not only in its stats but also in its competition with the existing weapon pool. Dolabra has sparked a widespread discussion about what kind of PvE capabilities a Legendary weapon should possess.
This article will examine Dolabra's actual performance in combat, considering its crafting cost and resource acquisition difficulty, to explore its true role in the current version of Arc Raiders.
Dolabra's Disparity
Dolabra's most appealing feature is its exaggerated bullet spread. When facing aerial missiles launched by Bombardiers, players don't need precise aiming; simply pointing in the general direction of the target will allow the spread of bullets to completely destroy the missile in mid-air.
It makes interception maneuvers that previously required extremely high precision effortless. In contrast, hitting fast-moving aerial targets with traditional weapons like Anvil is a significant challenge for most players.
Two bullets can destroy a flying unit, and shooting its thrusters can also damage those behind it - this efficiency seems quite good. However, when we turn our attention to more powerful enemies, Dolabra's shortcomings become glaringly obvious.
Take Covered and Bombardier as examples. The standard strategy for most PvE weapons is to directly attack their top weak points, utilizing their high armor penetration to quickly inflict massive damage. Equalizer, Jupiter, and Hullcracker can all achieve this kill in a short time.
While Dolabra also possesses strong Arc armor penetration, its actual kill time is significantly longer than the aforementioned weapons. Using a lower-quality Anvil or Patina might actually resolve the issue faster. This means that Dolabra not only offers no advantage in core PvE scenarios but also slows down the pace of combat.
Analysis of Dolabra's Performance in Combat
To compensate for its lack of direct damage output, players have developed a specific tactic against Dolabra: first, double-shot Covered or Bombardier's yellow knee area to briefly paralyze them.
Use this opportunity to circle around to their back and destroy the yellow ammo canister with four bullets, exposing the internal core. Then, unleash all ammo while the core is exposed. This process sounds strategic, but it suffers from two fatal flaws in practice.
During the brief period of enemy paralysis, players cannot inflict sufficient damage before the magazine runs out. Once reloading is needed, the enemy will stand up again, significantly diminishing the previous effort. If the same tactic is executed with Volcano, the enemy would already be completely eliminated.
When attacking the cores of Matriarch and Queen, Dolabra's damage per magazine is exactly the same as Equalizer.
However, the difference in rate of fire and the somewhat clunky reloading animation result in a drastically different actual damage output efficiency. Equalizer can empty its magazine and reload much faster, while Dolabra's slower rate of fire gives enemies more time to retaliate or recover.
Dolabra truly proves its worth when dealing with Wasps, Hornets, and Fireflies. Its two-shot kill efficiency rivals other top-tier PvE weapons, and thanks to its large bullet spread, players hardly need precise aiming. For players who find aiming too tedious, Dolabra offers a convenient solution.
However, taking down small flying units isn't a particularly challenging task; Jupiter, Hullcracker, and even Equalizer can achieve similar kill speeds. Dolabra's performance in this area is merely adequate, far from the dominance expected of a Legendary weapon.
In Stella Montis's Tick trial, Dolabra finally finds its place. Ticks dart around at incredible speeds, making them an accurate test of a player's reaction time and prediction when hitting them with precision weapons like Anvil.
Dolabra's large bullet spread makes it easy to hit targets even with hip-fire, occasionally even hitting two ticks with a single shot. From this perspective, Dolabra is arguably the optimal weapon for Tick Trial.
However, against Shredder, Dolabra again reveals its lack of damage. Shredder has high Arc armor, which Dolabra's single-shot damage struggles to penetrate quickly, resulting in a kill time similar to Anvil's. In this situation, Dolabra is essentially a weapon on par with Anvil.
Dolabra was designed to be effective in close to mid-range combat, with the scope narrowing the bullet spread to give it some mid-range capability.
However, testing revealed that even at maximum range, damage drop-off in the outer area is severe, and bullet spread remains noticeable. This means that unless the player brings the target very close, Dolabra cannot deliver satisfactory output.
This positioning - lacking speed in close combat and accuracy at long range - makes Dolabra completely disadvantaged against mid-range enemies like Rocketeer and Vaporizer.
In contrast, Anvil's stable performance at long range is more reliable. Dolabra neither inherits Anvil's long-range accuracy nor Volcano's close-range burst damage, ultimately becoming a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.
Horizontal Comparison
The following is a horizontal comparison of Equalizer, Jupiter, Hullcracker, Volcano, and Dolabra.
Equalizer
Equalizer is currently widely recognized as the best weapon for killing large Arc units. Whether facing the core of Matriarch or the core of Queen, it can unleash damage at lightning speed. Equalizer remains the best large Arc killer.
Its high rate of fire, high damage, and smooth reload make it virtually irreplaceable in PvE scenarios. Compared to it, Dolabra has no competitive advantage other than its bullet spread.
Jupiter
Jupiter performs excellently against Bombardier, Covered, Rocketeer, and Vaporizer. It combines high armor penetration with stable damage output, making it adaptable to various combat scenarios. Jupiter is the best Arc killer, a position that Dolabra cannot challenge.
Hullcracker
Hullcracker has a unique advantage when dealing with Shredders, and as an all-around weapon, it performs consistently well in various scenarios. In contrast, Dolabra performs poorly against Shredders, failing to demonstrate the true value of a Legendary weapon.
Superior Alternatives
Volcano outperforms Dolabra in both PvP and PvE scenarios, while Anvil is superior in ranged accuracy and damage consistency. This means that even without Dolabra, players can have a better combat experience with lower-cost weapons. Dolabra's existence is more like a high-cost, low-return trap option.
Value
Dolabra's crafting cost is significantly lower than other Legendary weapons. It only requires two Vaporizer Regulators, three Magnetic Accelerators, and three Shredder Gyros.
These materials are easier to obtain compared to other Legendary weapons, and crafting them is even simpler than crafting some Epic weapons. More importantly, Dolabra is the only Legendary weapon in Arc Raiders Items that can be crafted without any weapon parts.
However, low cost should not be an excuse for the mediocre performance of a Legendary weapon. If Dolabra's performance in actual combat is only equivalent to an Epic weapon, then its Legendary label becomes misleading.
Players invest resources to craft it, expecting combat capabilities commensurate with its power, not to be forgiven simply because it's easy to craft.
In Arc Raiders Items, Legendary weapons often represent the pinnacle of power in the current version. The high difficulty of obtaining materials like Queen Core and Matriarch Core is the price paid for this strength.
Dolabra breaks this convention, but instead of creating a new balance paradigm, it confuses players about the definition of Legendary.
Improvements
If Dolabra had a smaller spread when aiming and a clearly defined maximum effective range, it would truly possess mid-range combat capabilities. This change wouldn't disrupt the balance; instead, it would allow Dolabra to find a better balance between precision shooting and area-of-effect suppression.
Dolabra's current strong Arc armor penetration doesn't translate into actual kill efficiency. Adding extra damage multipliers to weak points on units like Covered and Bombardier, or shortening the reload time after being paralyzed, would allow it to play an irreplaceable role in certain tactics.
Dolabra's low production cost is its unique selling point and shouldn't be weakened. However, a slight increase in rate of fire or a reduction in reload time could allow it to unleash more damage within its output window. These adjustments wouldn't change its resource allocation but would significantly improve the gameplay experience.
Dolabra is a bold attempt in the design of Arc Raiders Items - it offers players a convenient option for handling small Arc units and specific missions with its low production cost and unique bullet spread mechanism.
However, its lackluster performance against large Arc units and the significant performance gap compared to other Legendary weapons make it difficult for it to live up to Legendary name.
For players prioritizing PvE efficiency, Equalizer, Jupiter, and Hullcracker remain more reliable choices.
For players who already own Dolabra Blueprint and want to find a differentiated playstyle in Arc Raiders, this weapon is better suited as fun gear for Tick Trials or casual map exploration.
Perhaps the true value of Dolabra lies not in its strength, but in its distinctiveness. The definition of a Legendary weapon shouldn't have only one standard, but the prerequisite is that it must achieve true excellence in some dimension.
