Elden Ring Tarnished Edition Worth It? New Classes, Weapons, Torrent Customization and 5 Euros Upgrade Explained

As one of the most influential ARPGs since its release, Elden Ring has cultivated a large player community where players engage in exploration, boss battles, character creation, and endless replay value.

Recently, the upcoming Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, releasing on August 28th, has sparked heated discussions within the community. The main debate revolves around whether the added content is worth the extra 5 euros.

New Content

As an enhanced bundle of Elden Ring, Tarnished Edition includes the base game and the large DLC - Shadow of the Erdtree, along with new cosmetic and character creation content.

New Classes

Tarnished Edition adds two new starting character backgrounds:

  • Heavy Knight
  • Idus Knight

For players experiencing Elden Ring for the first time, the addition of new classes means more ways to begin their adventure.

Choosing a starting class has always been a crucial part of the game, as it influences early combat style, equipment acquisition, and character progression speed.

For example, the early game experience for players choosing Knight class is drastically different from those choosing a magic-focused or agile build.

These new classes are especially valuable to veteran players, as Elden Ring's greatest strength lies in its high re-playability.

Unlike other single-player games where the experience ends after completion, Elden Ring encourages repeated playthroughs. Different builds, challenge modes, weapon combinations, and role-playing philosophies completely change how we explore the same world.

Therefore, the new classes provide veteran players with a reason to embark on new adventures in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition.

New Weapons and Equipment

Beyond the introduction of new classes, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition also expands the arsenal with additional weapons and shields, giving players more ways to customize their builds and combat approaches.

For casual players, these new equipment options may feel like a relatively small addition. However, for those who enjoy competitive gameplay and deep build experimentation in Elden Ring, the impact of these weapons goes far beyond simple stat improvements.

Since the game's combat system is built around creativity and experimentation, even a single new weapon can encourage players to develop unique builds, explore alternative strategies, and discover different playstyles.

Ultimately, the value of these new weapons is not about replacing existing Elden Ring Items, but rather about creating more opportunities for players to experiment, revisit familiar areas, and experience the world from a new perspective.

Torrent Appearance Customization

It's been officially confirmed that for the first time, players are allowed to change the appearance of their Torrent in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, with three Torrent customization skins available - something not previously available in the base game or DLC.

Currently, official information indicates that these skins primarily change:

  • Torrent body color
  • Soul lighting effects
  • Mane visual effects
  • Overall riding style

While they don't change any attributes or provide any bonuses, this addition addresses a long-standing regret for many veteran Elden Ring players. Torrent is arguably one of the longest-lasting companions, yet after dozens of gear changes, Torrent still looks the same.

Therefore, Torrent appearance customization primarily enhances in-game immersion and character personalization.

Looking solely at the new content of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, it's certainly something to look forward to. However, compared to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, is the content too little?

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Tarnished Edition VS Shadow of the Erdtree

This is currently the most discussed issue among players.

In terms of content, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree brought new areas, new bosses, new weapons and combat mechanics, as well as additional story elements, receiving widespread praise from players at the time.

This led to high expectations for Tarnished Edition from the very beginning.

To be honest, the new classes and equipment in Tarnished Edition only offer different configurations for the game experience, not a truly entirely new experience. Especially for players who already own many weapons and armor, the additional customization options are less important.

Therefore, players who had high expectations for Tarnished Edition are mostly disappointed.

Performance Issues

Besides content, another concern for players regarding Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is its performance.

While the official announcement for Switch 2 version showcased smoother visuals and optimizations compared to the original, some players remain cautious about the experience.

Especially after previous issues with Elden Ring on some platforms, such as frame rate fluctuations and stuttering, players are worried whether Tarnished Edition can truly resolve these performance problems.

In community discussions, many players expressed that they are not only looking forward to more new content, but also hope that this enhanced version will deliver a more stable gaming experience.

After all, one of Elden Ring's greatest appeals is its open-world exploration, and stable performance directly impacts the gaming experience when exploring large areas, challenging bosses, or engaging in multiplayer.

Currently, the official information regarding specific optimization details for Switch 2 version is limited, so players will still need to wait for the official release to see its actual performance.

If Tarnished Edition can further improve game stability beyond the added content, then the value of this upgrade will undoubtedly be even more apparent.

However, if performance issues persist, for veteran players who already own the original game and DLC, a few new classes, equipment, and cosmetic content might not be enough to motivate them to pay again for Elden Ring.

Is It Worth 5 Euros?

The price of Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is confirmed at 5 euros. For that 5 euros, we get more of an enhanced gameplay experience than entirely new adventures. From my own perspective, 5 euros is indeed worthwhile.

Because I believe diverse character building and new area exploration are equally important; not every upgrade needs to completely change the game's story to be valuable.

The new classes, weapons, and customization options in Tarnished Edition may not fundamentally change the game, but they reinforce one of Elden Ring's greatest strengths: experiencing the same world in countless different ways.

Looking at it this way, the meaning and value it brings for only 5 euros is a very good deal.

In short, Tarnished Edition may not have the massive impact of a large expansion pack, but it confirms that Elden Ring is a vibrant experience for both new and veteran players.
