To celebrate the upcoming release of A Minecraft Movie, which was filmed in New Zealand, New Zealand has teamed up with Warner Bros. and Mojang Studios of Sweden to create the world’s first New Zealand-themed module for the game “Minecraft”, inviting players to explore the beautiful land of New Zealand in the game.
Players will embark on a wonderful exploration journey in this New Zealand-themed module and experience a series of real-world activities. They can paddle a traditional Maori canoe waka across the bay of Abel Tasman National Park, go deep into Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and see countless glowworms create dazzling and charming scenes in the caves. Or they can look up at Milky Way under the starry sky of Tekapo and experience the magnificent scenery of New Zealand. Although this is a virtual adventure in the game, players can turn this virtual journey into a real dream journey by booking the same route and experience in Minecraft.
The game features six iconic destinations and experiences in New Zealand, namely Waitomo Glowworm Caves in Waikato, Rotorua in Bay of Plenty, Kapiti Island in Wellington, Abel Tasman National Park in Nelson Tasman, Lake Tekapo in Mackenzie, and Doubtful Sound in Fiordland.
Minecraft is the world’s best-selling video game, with global sales exceeding 300 million copies due to its wide appeal. Through this partnership, Tourism New Zealand can reach 70% of its core target audience in its major markets, who are the active players of Minecraft, making the game an important channel for Tourism New Zealand’s global promotion.
Tourism New Zealand CEO René de Monchy hopes that this innovative partnership will turn virtual game experiences into real travel inspiration, inspiring players to travel to New Zealand and experience its unique charm. Mr. De Munch said: “This is an invitation to players around the world to come to New Zealand and experience the infinite fun of this land. Through the game, we hope to provide players with an immersive experience and let them appreciate the wonderful things about New Zealand.”
This game module will be launched simultaneously with A Minecraft Movie co-produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black and was filmed entirely in New Zealand.
Torfi Frans Ólafsson is the senior creative director of original content and entertainment for Minecraft, and the producer of A Minecraft Movie. He is full of enthusiasm for this cooperation. He said: “Filming A Minecraft Movie in New Zealand is an unforgettable experience. During the cooperation, the talent and creativity shown by the local New Zealand team perfectly interpret the values cherished by A Minecraft Movie: positivity, creativity and curiosity.”
“During the filming, we made full use of our free time to explore the magnificent scenery of New Zealand in depth. We took countless day trips around Auckland, and many people also went to South Island for a more in-depth exploration. When the filming ended, we felt very reluctant because there were still many places to explore. But like many team members, I have already started planning my next trip to New Zealand as a tourist.” Olafsson added, “New Zealand has many unique experiences that cannot be offered anywhere else in the world. We are very much looking forward to letting players appreciate the charm of this land through this New Zealand mod.”
